Abstract

In recent years, with continuous strengthening of China’s policy for domestic demand
expansion and significant improvement of the income levels of urban residents, the information
consumption has become a focus of the new round of consumption structure upgrading among China’s
urban residents. Combining the time series data from 1993 to 2008, this paper conducts an empirical
study of information consumption by urban residents from the two aspects of the total income and structure by employing the TVP model. It is found in the study that the effect of income of urbanresidents on their information consumption declined during 1993-2000, while during 2001-2008 the effect is growing. From a structural point of view, the information consumption of urban residents has a high degree response toward their wage income and transfer income, while toward its operative income and property income, the degree of response is quite low.
